Penguin Bookcovers

Entry for the 2018 Penguin Student Awards. These book covers were made to illustrate the stories of George Orwell and Malorie Blackman.

Animal Farm by George Orwell

Inspired by the 1950s propaganda posters and their use of colours and typography. I also wanted to portray the animals in the story in a very human and obscure way, showcasing perhaps some ugliness and vulnerability.

Noughts & Crosses by Malorie Blackman

I chose the flag to illustrate that the story is set in the UK. It is facing downward to showcase vulnerability and the colours are inverted to resemble the alternate reality and ‘reversed racism’. I extended the pole to the back, to showcase the hanging, which was a reoccurring theme and a memorable moment.
